We can’t afford 442 percent school fee hike – OAUTH nursing students lament

...

Nursing students of Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, Ile-Ife, Osun State, have lamented the 442 per cent hike in their school fees.

The management of the school had reviewed the fees payable by the student from N140,000 to 640,000 for HND students, while those for ND midwifery and PON were reviewed from N140,000 to N361,000.

A statement issued by the Students Union Government and signed by President Akinade Solomon and two others said the fees were initially reviewed upwards to N840,000 and 536,000, representing a 442 and 112 per cent increase, respectively.

Solomon, while speaking with Vanguard on Monday, said the review, which affected nursing students, midwives, and perioperative nurses (NASNMPONN), could lead to the withdrawal of students from schools as it is too exorbitant for many of them to afford.

“We have sent a proposal to the management for consideration in line with what is obtainable in other nursing schools across the country.

“In the proposal, though still very high, we proposed that HND students pay N305,000 from N140,000 because of professional examination fees, while ND students pay N200,000.

“However, the school has not given us any response, and the union has also insisted that students should not pay the new fees until the impasse is resolved,” he said.
