Julian Nagelsmann is expected to be appointed as the new manager of the Germany men’s national football team, according to reports monitored by THEWILL.

The 36-year-old will take over on an interim basis until the end of Euro 2024, which Germany is hosting. Nagelsmann will replace Hansi Flick, who was sacked earlier this month after Germany’s embarrassing 4-1 defeat to Japan in a friendly match. Flick’s only major tournament in charge saw Germany crash out of the 2022 World Cup at the group stage.

The former Bayern Munich boss has been out of work since being dismissed by the German champions back in March. Despite winning the Bundesliga title in his first season, a disappointing run of results led to Nagelsmann being replaced by Thomas Tuchel.

Before his spell at Bayern, Nagelsmann spent two years at RB Leipzig, guiding them to their first-ever UEFA Champions League semi-final. His Bundesliga managerial experience also included managing TSG 1899 Hoffenheim for three seasons.

Although he drew interest from Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Paris Saint-Germain over the summer, all three clubs ended up appointing different managers, with Mauricio Pochettino going to Stamford Bridge, Ange Postecoglou to North London and Luiz Enrique taking over at Les Parisiens.

Ahead of the Euro 2024 kicks off on June 14, Germany will play two friendlies in October against the USMNT and Mexico. With Germany automatically qualifying as hosts, Nagelsmann’s first competitive match will be their opening group game of Euro 2024. They will be looking to improve after exiting the last two World Cups at the group stage and losing to England in the Euro 2020 last 16.
