Manchester United faced an unexpected challenge in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Sunday, before defeating fourth-tier Newport County 4-2 to progress to the next stage of the competition. The win did not come easy for the English Premier League side, who had to fight back after finding themselves tied 2-2 early in the second half against the minnows from Wales.

United started strong, taking a 2-0 lead in the first half through goals by Bruno Fernandes and 18-year-old Kobbie Mainoo. However, Newport stunned the visitors by scoring two quick goals after the break to level the match. United appeared rattled and struggled to regain control of the game.

The turning point came just past the hour mark when Antony pounced on a rebound to restore United’s lead. That settled United, and they were able to see out the win after Rasmus Hojlund added a late fourth goal in stoppage time.

It was far from a vintage performance from United. Their defending left much to be desired, and they were fortunate that Newport could not fully capitalise on the chances they were afforded.

Still, manager Erik Ten Hag will simply be relieved to have navigated this potential banana skin and have his team progress. They will next travel to either Bristol City or Nottingham Forest, where they will hope for an improved showing as they continue their quest for another FA Cup trophy.
