Europe reclaimed the Ryder Cup on Sunday, securing the four points needed to defeat America at Marco Simone Golf Course in Italy. Led by Englishman Tommy Fleetwood, Europe extended their three-decade home unbeaten streak against the US and avenged their 19-9 thrashing in 2021.
Despite starting the day facing a daunting 15.5-10.5 point deficit, the Americans mounted a fierce fightback attempt. They found their best form after two days of being outplayed, hauling back points to put pressure on the Europeans. But it was not enough, as Fleetwood clinched the winning point in a thrilling finish.
Fleetwood sealed a 3 & 1 victory over Rickie Fowler when Fowler conceded the 16th hole, guaranteeing Europe would get to 14.5 points. The celebrations had already started at that point, as the trophy was mathematically certain to go back across the Atlantic.
Europe captain Luke Donald praised his team’s determination after they seized control on Friday. “They put up a fight today so hats off to them,” he said of the US comeback bid. “But I am so proud of my 12 guys.”
Norway’s Viktor Hovland was outstanding, notching 7 birdies in beating Collin Morikawa 4 & 3. Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm also won points before Fleetwood delivered the final blow to defeat the Americans on home soil yet again.
